Weddings at the Barn at Boyden Farm

The Barn at Boyden Farm

The Barn at Boyden Farm is a pretty magical place to get married. It’s nestled in the farmland of Boyden Valley in Cambridge Vermont with mountain views of Smuggler’s Notch. The surrounding local vineyard makes it that much more bucolic. Having shot a few weddings there on several occasions I’m putting together another one of my venue photo tours. The goal is to create a helpful overview of what a venue looks like at different times. You can also link to Matt & Justine’s wedding here and Andrew & Elena’s wedding here.

Getting Ready

I’ve worked with couples who have gotten ready at the Barn and couples who have gotten ready offsite. There are a few Inns nearby if you’re looking for both your overnight accommodations and a place for prepping before the wedding.

But if you’re staying further away and it makes more sense for scheduling to get ready at the Barn, they do have a few finished rooms in the basement that are perfect for that task and can handle a decent sized wedding party. Even if you just need a touch up, it’s a great space to stash your stuff for the evening. And there are windows for secretly watching your guests arrive.

Ceremony

I’ve probably mentioned this before but I love it when there’s a long approach down the wedding aisle. I love it not only because it gives me a lot of opportunity for photos, but it allows a lot of time for emotions to build. Walking from the barn to the ceremony pavilion is just such an opportunity.

The ceremony typically takes place under the pavilion that faces sprawling farmland and Mt. Mansfield. Oftentimes couples use an arbor just outside the pavilion for the wedding party and officiant.

Portraits

There are so many great spots for couple portraits and formal group shots right around the venue. There’s farm fields, barns, tractors, and after a certain hour the surrounding vineyard. Also, there’s that view to take advantage of.

Cocktails

Weather permitting, the outdoor patio is perfect for cocktail hour. There’s plenty of room to mingle, partake in some lawn games or relax under a patio umbrella. Around the corner there’s also a big play set with some awesome swings to keep kiddos occupied.

The Barn

ThebBarn itself is a wide open space with authentic elements like exposed timber framing and barn board walls combined with more formal finishes like polished wood tables, chairs and classy chandeliers. Guest tables are divided among the “stalls” which are separated by wide aisles. While every couple adds their own finishing touches to create their own unique style, the barn’s existing ambiance is equally rustic and classic.

Formalities

The broad aisles within the barn are where the formalities like the entrances, first dance and toasts happen. They meet in a nice central location giving all the guests a view and the open barn doors flanked by broad windows bathe the spot in lovely natural light.

Dancing

The open area in the North end of the barn houses the bar and dance floor. It’s a spacious spot for kicking up your heels and there’s still plenty of room to dance if you opt for a band.

Dusk

I love dusk at Boyden. Maybe its the mountains diffusing the evening light? The barn takes on a warm glow under the deepening blue sky. The light softens and makes the view look completely different. It’s a great time to take the couple out for a few more portraits and get them to take a step back to take in the whole night.
