Wedding at the Alerin Barn | Mikael + Emily

As I drove to St. Johnsbury for Emily and Mikael’s wedding at the Alerin Barn the colors of the fall foliage increased in intensity. It became clear that the coveted moment of “peak color” was happening in this corner of Vermont. I couldn’t wait to get started.

Getting Ready

Familiar turns led me onto a dirt road and the hidden wedding oasis that is the Alerin Barn. Once there it’s in its own world, which is part of what drew Emily and Mikael to choose this place. While the bride got ready in the bridal suite in the main house, the groom was nervously waiting his turn in the bunk house just across the courtyard. Meanwhile staff was busily prepping the pavilion and barn for the day ahead. With both the bride and groom so close by I was able to hop back and forth the catch some key moments for each. Both had a note and gift to be delivered to each other. Even when this moment is preplanned it’s still full of surprise when each person is surprised by the gift or moved by the words.

I had two favorite moments while they were getting ready. The first was when Mikael and Emily had a last minute conversation from behind a wall so as not to see each other yet. The second was when I asked Mikael why he was so nervous and he replied “It’s Emily, I never thought I would find anyone like her”.

Holly Coons was Emily’s expert hair stylist and one of Emily’s friends did her makeup.

First Look

At this time of year, when dusk comes so much earlier it can be a good idea to have a First Look. Wanting to maximize their enjoyment of a day that took so much long-distance planning the couple wanted to have this moment up front. The big reveal occurred next to the pond which was reflecting the brilliant colors. After giving the couple some time to soak each other in we wandered. The walk was as much about taking in the beauty of the property around the venue and enjoying the best of what Vermont can offer as it was for taking photos. Emily looked stunning in her lace dress and Mikael of course was incomparable in his marine uniform.

Portraits

We had a enough time to get through our complete list of wedding party and family portraits before the ceremony as well. I was so happy everyone showed up on time! Especially since the radar suggested we wouldn’t have much cooperation capturing any overflow after the ceremony.

I loved the floral headpieces Emily found for the bridesmaids. Paired with their goddess-like gowns the ethereal vibe Emily was aiming for came to life. The smallest attendants were pretty darn cute too.

The Ceremony

Atop the ceremony hill beneath the wood beam arbor, the couple tied the knot in a very emotional ceremony. Guests had a view of the vibrant valley below. The timing was perfect. The cloud cover provided great light but the rain held off. Soft blankets were available for those who were underprepared for the cooler temps. The crowd tossed birdseed as the newly married couple walked down the aisle. The post ceremony walk down the hill is always the perfect end to a ceremony at the Alerin Barn. It provides a moment right after finally becoming husband and wife to fully absorb their new status and also to enjoy the view and the whole setting.

Cocktails

Cocktail hour was held under the pavilion. Tasty hors d’oeuvres and a toasty campfire kept everyone happy. Blood’s Catering provided all the yumminess including a family-style meal during the reception. I had time before the reception to add some more detail shots to the collection I captured earlier. The rustic barn was layered with diy-ed romantic florals, guest favors wrapped in burlap, and mercury votives. Everything came together perfectly.

Reception

The rest of the night was filled with tears and laughs, dancing and noshing and everything a wedding should be. Premier Entertainment kept the music flowing.
