engagement sessions

Engagement sessions truly capture the essence of my vision as a photographer. Check out my top 5 reasons why below…

1. Getting to know you

Planning a wedding sometimes means booking vendors long distance. Lots of my couples are either from out of state and are planning a destination wedding in Vermont, or they were once Vermont residents that have since moved away but are coming back home for their celebration. In both cases, that means that they have usually decided to book me through their experience with me on the web, in emails and over the phone. While that gives us a chance to get to know each other a bit, nothing beats meeting in person. And during an engagement session, it goes one step further because you get to experience how I work as a photographer. I get to see how you react to the camera. When the wedding day finally arrives, we’re all comfortable and not meeting each other for the first time.

2. Practice Makes Perfect

Getting used to your photographer also means that you’ll be more relaxed on the big day. And the more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will look. Getting photographed is not something we do often enough so you may be fearful that you’ll look awkward. Guess what…it is awkward! But, isn’t always great to work through that anxiety ahead of time and find out it’s not so bad after all? So many of my couples share the same fear but after the engagement session admit that they actually had fun. The added bonus: you’ll get to see that you look awesome in photos…and learn that it’s okay to admit that!

3. Fun personal photos

I love it when my couples make their engagement session personal. Picking a theme or activity that you like as a couple makes for fun portraits and also celebrates that part of your relationship. Fishing, hiking, rock climbing…I’m game. Like to cozy up together with books? We can make a session out of that too! If you end up using your engagement photos for save-the-dates or as part of your wedding day decor, it will tell your guests something unique about you. And best of all it’s just another way to make your session fun. People who understand my shooting style know that my kind of session doesn’t involve a lot of stand-there-and-say-cheese. Some couples find that the casual style of their engagement photos are more to their taste when it comes to hanging pictures on the wall.

4. A relaxed pace

Engagement sessions usually last one to two hours during which time we’ve got plenty of time to relax. Even the best planned wedding schedules can be very fast paced. But engagement photos let you get some photos as a couple without the added pressure. These are memories of just the two of you, away from the throngs of loved ones and friends on your hectic wedding day.

5. Joy!

Being engaged is a glowy happy time. Seriously, this is an awesome moment. You’re in love, your friends and family are happy for you…the future looks amazing. Engagement photos are another way of celebrating the moment, here and now.

Bonus

You can put the images from your e-session to good use too. Those fun, memorable images are great for save-the-dates, wall portraits, your wedding sign-in book, a guest signature board, wedding table decor or invitations (shot early enough). They can also add another dimension to your wedding album, chronicling another part of your story.
